About University of East Anglia
The University of East Anglia (UEA) is a campus university on the outskirts of Norwich in eastern England. Founded in 1963, it has built a strong reputation in creative writing, environmental science, medicine and international development. UEA's campus is distinctive for its Brutalist architecture by Denys Lasdun (who also designed London's National Theatre) and its location adjacent to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, one of Britain's most important galleries.
UEA's Creative Writing programme is the most famous in the UK โ its alumni include Kazuo Ishiguro (Nobel Prize in Literature), Ian McEwan and Anne Enright. The Climatic Research Unit at UEA is one of the world's leading centres for climate change data and analysis. The university also has a strong medical school and notable environmental science research.
For North American students, UEA offers a distinctive campus experience in a beautiful, affordable part of England. Norwich itself is a historic cathedral city with a surprisingly rich cultural scene, and the Norfolk coast (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is close by.

Campus & Student Life
UEA's campus is a self-contained site on the edge of Norwich, bordering the River Yare and the Norfolk Broads. The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (free entry) is on campus and houses works by Picasso, Bacon and Giacometti. The campus has a distinctive Brutalist aesthetic โ the zigzag student residences are architectural icons. Norwich itself is a medieval walled city with a castle, cathedral, excellent independent restaurants and a thriving market. It's quiet compared to major cities, but students who want a focused, community-oriented experience thrive here.

UEA accepts AP scores (typically 4-5), IB diploma (32-34 points) and Canadian provincial qualifications. The Creative Writing programme is a particular draw for North American students with literary ambitions โ there's nothing equivalent in the UK. UEA's campus model will feel familiar to North American students, and the lower entry requirements (compared to Oxford or Cambridge) make it accessible while still offering a high-quality research university experience.
