About University College London

University College London (UCL) was founded in 1826 as England's first university to admit students regardless of religion, and the first to admit women on equal terms with men. Today it is one of the world's top 10 universities and the largest university in London by student numbers, with over 46,000 students.

UCL is a comprehensive university with strengths across the full range of disciplines β€” from medicine and engineering to architecture, law and the arts. Its main campus in Bloomsbury, central London, places it among the British Museum, the British Library and London's West End theatres.

For North American students, UCL offers the breadth of a large research university (comparable to a top UC campus or University of Toronto) combined with the cultural richness of central London. Its interdisciplinary approach and connections to the UCL Hospitals NHS Trust make it especially strong in health sciences.

Campus & Student Life

UCL's Bloomsbury campus is a mix of Georgian townhouses and modern facilities centred on the Portico building on Gower Street. Student life benefits enormously from the London location β€” world-class museums, theatres, restaurants and nightlife are all within walking distance. The Students' Union is one of the most active in the UK, with over 300 clubs and societies. UCL has a more relaxed, cosmopolitan atmosphere than Oxford or Cambridge, with fewer formal traditions.

UCL actively recruits from North America and has a large US/Canadian student population, particularly at postgraduate level. AP scores of 5 in three subjects are typically required for undergraduate admission, alongside strong GPA. IB diploma holders need 34-40 points depending on programme. UCL's size and breadth make it a good fit for students who want a top-tier London education without the ultra-specialised focus of Imperial or LSE.
