UCAS Points Converter

Convert your AP exam scores, IB diploma results, or GPA into UK UCAS Tariff Points — and see which universities your grades open up.

What are UCAS Tariff Points?

UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralised system used to apply to undergraduate programmes at UK universities. UCAS Tariff Points convert different qualifications — A-levels, IB, AP exams, BTECs, and more — into a single comparable points score.

Universities set minimum tariff point requirements for each course. For example, a competitive Russell Group programme might ask for 144 points (equivalent to AAA at A-level), while a broader-entry programme might ask for 112 points (BBC).

This tool is for undergraduate applicants. Postgraduate applicants typically apply directly to universities and do not use UCAS tariff points.

Add each AP exam you have taken (or plan to take). Scores of 3, 4, or 5 qualify for UCAS tariff points.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are UCAS Tariff Points?
UCAS Tariff Points are a system used by UK universities to compare qualifications from around the world. They assign a numerical value to grades from qualifications like A-Levels, IB Diploma, AP exams, and others, allowing universities to set consistent entry requirements.
How do AP scores convert to UCAS points?
AP exam scores of 5 are worth 50 UCAS points, a score of 4 is worth 35 points, and a score of 3 is worth 20 points. Scores of 1-2 do not earn UCAS Tariff Points. Most competitive UK universities expect scores of 4 or 5.
How does the IB Diploma convert to UCAS points?
The full IB Diploma (24-45 points) converts to between 260 and 720 UCAS Tariff Points. Individual Higher Level IB subjects are also worth UCAS points: a 7 at HL is worth 56 points, while a 4 at HL is worth 23 points. Standard Level subjects carry fewer points.
Can I use my US GPA to apply to UK universities?
US GPA is not directly included in the UCAS Tariff system, but UK universities do accept it as part of a holistic assessment. Most Russell Group universities look for a GPA of 3.5+ (on a 4.0 scale), alongside SAT/ACT scores and AP results where available.
Do Canadian grades convert to UCAS points?
Canadian provincial high school grades are assessed holistically by UK universities rather than through an exact UCAS Tariff conversion. Generally, averages of 85%+ are competitive for top universities. Some UK institutions publish specific Canadian grade requirements.
Disclaimer: UCAS tariff points shown are based on the 2023 UCAS Tariff and are for guidance only. Individual universities and courses set their own entry requirements — always check directly with admissions offices before applying. North American qualifications (GPA, AP, IB) are assessed holistically by UK universities; this tool provides an approximate comparison only.
